Working with Operation Christmas Child

For several years now, abc and Rope and Rescue have worked closely with Samaritan's Purse. Samaritan's Purse is an international charitable organization that deals with medical aid and disaster relief among other things.

A major Samaritan's Purse project is called Operation Christmas Child (OCC). People around the world are invited to package a shoe box sized gift that will be distributed to impoverished children. The boxes usually contain items like toys, toiletries, clothing, and candy. Last year approximately 8 million boxes went out.

Each year, we put together several thousand of these boxes in our warehouse. So far this year we've made nearly 2,000.

This year we are asking for your help. Samaritan's Purse has a great new tool where you can put together a shoe box gift online. You customize the contents, add a personalized note, and pay $35 to cover the contents and shipping. It's all online and takes only a few minutes.

Once you've made a box, just forward the confirmation email to us. To show our appreciation we'll send you back a coupon for a 5% coupon (not to be combined with other offers).

Thanks for your help!

Touring West Metro Fire

Hey, it's Jacob Wallace again from Rope and Rescue. I just finished touring the new training facility for West Metro Fire in Colorado. This state-of-the-art facility is a combination of classroom training and hands on experience. Spread across the campus are areas for practicing USAR, wilderness SAR, confined space rescue, trench rescue, dive rescue, residential and commercial fire rescue, and more. You could literally train for any scenario at this facility.

Also on campus is Colorado Task Force. These are the guys that help in disasters like Katrina or 9/11.

Special thanks to West Metro Fire for its hospitality and for the great job they do! Stay safe out there.

Meeting with Petzl America

Hey guys, this is Jacob again from Rope and Rescue. Yesterday we got to meet with Charlie Oliver, our regional rep for Petzl America. Charlie was kind enough to bring out some of the latest Petzl gear.
Of course, the centerpiece of the Petzl line is it's work positioning system. The Navaho Bod Croll Fast is a slick harness that has an ascender built in. When paired with a hand ascender, it is a simple system for ascending a rope. The harness has many built in attachment points so connecting to your main line and safety line is a breeze. For descent Petzl has the popular I'D and RIG for advanced users. For safety, there is the ASAP, a trailing rope grab that is anti-panic.

Charlie also showed us the latest in Petzl pulleys and headlamps. Expect to see those on the site very soon.
Special thanks to Charlie and Petzl for coming out and supporting Rope and Rescue. We love getting our hands on the equipment and learning new techniques.

Meeting with Capital Safety

Yesterday we got to meet with Capital Safety and check out some of their exciting new gear! The new Exofit harnesses are incredible! Light, easy to put on, full of features... They have built in ladders so that you can take the weight off your legs after a fall. They also have the iSafe tag so that you can make inspections easier. Lots of varieties are available. Look for these harness on our site in the very near future.

Craig Shur (our rep) also showed us a slick rescue tool. After taking a fall, this can be attached to the victim. It has a 10:1 lift ratio and controlled descent of 2 ft per second. We'll have this on our site soon too!

Thanks to Craig and Capital Safety for coming out. It's always great to see the latest gear!

Friday!

It is time to get out there! For those of you who work hard all week, you are probably looking forward to relax outdoors. Hopefully you have all your gear ready. Remember to inspect your equipment EVERY TIME. Your life depends on it. Inspection Sheets are a great way to keep track of your gear. Get on the habit of filling it out every time you or someone else uses the equipment. Discard of any worn or damaged equipment and make sure no one else gets to use it as well.

Electronic record keeping is an excellent (and time saving) approach. Check out the iSafe System from DBI/SALA. It uses a pre-installed retrofit tag on your gear and using an external reader (sort of an scanner) you can type your entire inspection into the hand-held device and download the inspection sheet to your computer. Keeping track of several pieces of equipment has never been easier. Purchase additional tags and install them yourself to other pieces of equipment like harnesses, helmets, lanyards, chairs, etc.
